Watchdog to limit access to resources distributing virus fake news

MOSCOW, Mar 4 (PRIME) -- The Russian communications service has added fake news about the coronavirus infection posted in social networks into the register of banned information, the authority said on Wednesday in a statement.

“The communications service received a request of the Prosecutor General’s Office containing links to messages in social networks, including VKontakte and Facebook, related to expansion of the new coronavirus infection,” the statement read.

The Prosecutor General’s Office found out that the resources contain unreliable information of social importance that creates a threat of civil disorders and to public security, of troubles for functioning or cessation of functioning of retail trade facilities.

Following the law, the communications watchdog is gradually limiting access to the resources, adding the links and their copies to the register and warning owners of the websites or hosting providers of the situation.
